Strata in the Alhambra

Initially, one is overwhelmed by the craftsmanship and plethora of patterns in the Alhambra: of tiles, wood, and stone there are geometric and organic shapes, words, and more. Through it all, there is a pattern to the patterns. The floor was the generally simplest layer, often with a monocrome herringbone pattern. Next came a geometric-motif tile layer, followed by a a border of words/arabic scripture. In the middle was a blank wall or a wall with a shallow monocrome pattern, providing a sense of clarity as this was head height. Above the large blank part, the ceiling was ornate and this time, noticibly three dimensional. Thus, the complexity of ornament and its depth rose with the height of the room.
